Seeing an error on your Dymo LabelWriter 550 or 5XL such as “Only Dymo Genuine Labels”, “Invalid label”, or “Unrecognized label”? This isn’t caused by your software or driver. The 550/5XL series only works with Dymo rolls that contain an RFID chip. Compatible rolls are blocked.
Why does this happen?
- RFID verification – The printer reads a chip in the roll. Without a valid chip, printing is disabled.
- Automatic label detection – The format is read from the chip. Without it, you’ll see “label not recognized” or “invalid size”.
What can you do?
- Use original Dymo rolls
If you want to keep using the 550/5XL, choose Original Dymo RFID rolls. The warning disappears instantly.
- Switch to a printer without RFID restrictions
If you prefer affordable compatible labels, use models without this limitation:- Dymo LabelWriter 450 / 4XL – fully compatible with non-RFID rolls.
- Zebra ZD421D / ZD621D or Brother TD-4410D – reliable 4-inch printers ideal for shipping labels (100×150 mm).

- Check software and drivers (won’t bypass RFID, but prevents other issues):- Install the latest Dymo Connect software.
- Ensure you selected the correct label size in your shipping software.
- Restart printer and computer after updates.
