This resin ribbon is the most durable choice for thermal transfer printing, meant for labels that take a beating: exposure to chemicals, heat, outdoor weather, friction or moisture. Think of labels on chemical drums, industrial rating plates, outdoor storage, or labels on plastic (polypropylene/polyester) packaging. Then this is the right choice. This ribbon measures 110mm x 300m.
The difference with wax lies in the composition: resin is far more chemical- and heat-resistant, and also adheres well to synthetic (plastic) labels, where wax doesn't hold up well enough. Do you mostly print on plain paper indoors, without any special demands? Then a wax ribbon is more affordable and works just as well.
This ribbon is used together with a thermal transfer printer: the printhead melts the resin coating on the ribbon onto the label. That gives a print that resists scratches, solvents and extreme temperatures, and stays legible and scannable long-term, even under harsh conditions.

Wax is formulated to bond with paper fibres. Plastic label materials like polypropylene, polyethylene and polyester don't have that fibre structure, so wax often doesn't adhere to them well, the print can smear or rub off easily.
Resin ink is formulated to bond chemically with these smoother, non-porous plastic surfaces, giving a print that stays put and resists scratching, moisture and many chemicals, something plain wax generally can't deliver on plastic.
Yes, resistance to scratching and abrasion is one of resin's main strengths. On suitable label materials, resin prints hold up well against rubbing, friction and general wear, generally better than wax or wax/resin.
The exact level of resistance still depends on the label material and coating in use, so for demanding applications it's a good idea to confirm performance with a test print on your actual label stock first.
Resin's resistance to moisture, temperature swings and general wear makes it a common choice for labels used outdoors, provided the label material itself is also rated for outdoor use, such as a weatherproof synthetic label stock.
Keep in mind that outdoor durability depends on the combination of ribbon, label material and adhesive together, and on the intensity of sun, rain or temperature extremes involved. For long-term or harsh outdoor exposure, it's worth checking the specifications of your label material alongside this ribbon.
