ECO or TOP labels: why we choose TOP

When you look for direct thermal labels, you will quickly come across the terms ECO and TOP. At first glance, this seems like a simple choice between two versions of the same product. In practice, the real difference is in how reliable the label remains during use. That is why BuyLabels has made a clear choice: we only supply TOP quality.

What are ECO and TOP labels?

Both ECO and TOP are direct thermal labels. This means no ribbon is required: the image is created by heat from the printhead. The difference is not in the printing method itself, but in the construction of the label material. ECO is the more basic quality, while TOP has an extra protective top coating.

Why does that matter?

A direct thermal label should not only print well at the moment it is produced. It also needs to remain readable and presentable during storage, transport and handling. That is exactly where the difference between ECO and TOP becomes relevant. In contact with moisture, friction, grease or everyday handling, TOP simply offers more protection.

Is ECO always the wrong choice?

No. It is not that absolute. For very short-term applications under stable conditions, ECO can be sufficient in some cases. Think of labels that are only used briefly and are not exposed to much handling or environmental stress. Even so, in practice this is often estimated too optimistically. Labels usually have to cope with more than expected.

Where ECO is less suitable in practice

The downside of ECO is that the printed image is more vulnerable to wear and outside influences. This increases the risk of fading, smudging or a less professional appearance over time. For shipping labels, warehouse labels and other professional applications, we consider that an unnecessary risk. The lower purchase price may seem attractive at first, but in actual use it can easily lead to inconvenience or errors.

Why we deliberately choose TOP

We believe a label should first and foremost be reliable. It should print well, remain easy to scan and still look neat after handling. That is why we consciously choose TOP quality. Thanks to the protective top coating, this material is better able to withstand moisture, friction and daily use. In our view, that makes TOP the safer choice for professional applications.

Buying cheaper is not always cheaper

Labels are still too often judged only by their lowest purchase price. That is understandable, but in practice a label needs to do the job it was bought for. If a label wears faster or loses readability sooner, the initial price advantage quickly disappears. In that case, buying cheaper is not automatically the more economical decision.

Our conclusion

Anyone who looks only at the lowest entry price may find ECO interesting. Anyone who looks at reliability, readability and professional use will usually end up with TOP. That is why BuyLabels only supplies TOP quality direct thermal labels. Not because it sounds better, but because we believe a label should keep performing when it actually matters.
