Transfer ribbon - resin - 64mm x 74m

This narrow resin ribbon is meant for smaller labels that still take a beating: think of rating plates, cable labels, small product labels in a warehouse or lab, or labels exposed to chemicals, heat or friction. The narrow width makes it suitable for desktop label printers that work with smaller labels. This ribbon measures 64mm x 74m.

The difference with wax lies in the composition: resin is far more chemical- and heat-resistant than wax, and also adheres well to synthetic (plastic) labels. Is it just plain paper labels without any special demands? Then a wax ribbon is more affordable.

This ribbon is used together with a thermal transfer printer: the printhead melts the resin coating on the ribbon onto the label, giving a print that resists scratches, solvents and extreme temperatures.

What's the difference between this resin ribbon and a wax ribbon?

A resin ribbon has an ink layer made mostly of resin instead of wax. It needs more heat to transfer onto the label, but the result is a print that's far more resistant to scratches, moisture, oils and many chemicals.

Wax works fine for plain paper labels under light use. Resin is the better choice when the label material is synthetic (polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester) or when the print needs to survive rough handling, cleaning agents or long-term storage.

Why choose this narrow 64mm version instead of the wider 110mm one?

The rule of thumb for ribbons is to pick the smallest width that fully covers your label web, with a few millimetres to spare. If your labels (including backing paper) are around 60mm wide, a 64mm ribbon is the efficient choice.

Using a wider ribbon than needed, such as 110mm, works technically fine, but a large part of the ribbon is never printed on. Over large volumes, that wastes material and increases your cost per label.

Do I also need to check the core diameter of this ribbon?

Yes. The ribbon core (25mm for this product) needs to match the ribbon holder or spindle in your printer, separately from the width and length. A ribbon with the right width but the wrong core simply won't fit onto the ribbon spindle.

Also check the maximum outer diameter of the wound roll that your printer's ribbon compartment can hold, especially if you're comparing this shorter roll to a longer one at the same width.

Is the higher price of this resin ribbon worth it compared to wax?

That depends entirely on what you're printing. For plain paper labels used indoors, without exposure to chemicals or heavy handling, wax gives a perfectly good result for a lower price, resin would be an unnecessary expense.

For synthetic labels, or prints that need to survive moisture, chemicals, scratching or long-term storage, resin is worth the extra cost: a wax print in those conditions can smear, fade or rub off, which often costs more in reprints and mislabelled products than the price difference ever would.
